Block Printing- Even Lions are frightened of Pink Spiders

First we selected the picture we wanted to use, scanned it in and printed it out to the right size.

Then we cut some thin Eva foam sheet to the same size as our picture.

We also cut 3 pieces of wood to the same size as the whole picture ( you have to make sure these are almost exactly the same)

The next thing to do is cover the back of the foam with double sided tape, we used the sort used for sticking down vinyl flooring as it very strong.

We then lightly stuck the print out on to the right side of the foam, we used display mount.

Next stage is to start cutting out, we did this with small pointy scissors and a craft knife (mum did all the cutting).

Once all the bits are cut out put the all back together like you would a jigsaw. Then we worked  out which order they would printed in.

We used the grass cut out as a guild for getting the other pieces in the right place on the blocks. We made sure that on each block that they all matched up with the bottom left hand corner, that way they should be in the right place when it comes to printing them.

The lion and the tree trunk was the first block to be stuck down. We did this by taking the back off the double sided tape on these bits only, but still leaving them jigsaw fashion in place the the rest of the bits. This means that when you turn it over and stick them down, they should stay in the right place.

Next block to be stuck in place was the lions mane, spider and the leave on the tree. They have enough space between them to allow you to do more than one colour at a time.

Next to be stuck was the sky

Finally the grass.

The printing process is in a different order. First to be printed was the grass. We printed ours with acrylic paints mixed with a block printing medium and a block printing rubber roller.

Make sure you press down evenly to get a good print, we found that the first few came out a bit patchy, so it might be worth while doing the first few on to some scrap paper and not the best stuff straight away.

Before you lift the first block off make sure you mark with two very small dots in pencil the corners of the block, so that you can us these as a guild to get the following blocks in the right position. Make sure these corners are the same one that you used as a guild when sticking the block in position, then hopefully they should match up. We left the print to dry before we printed the next block.

The lions body and the tree was next.

Finally the leaves, mane and spider were added. The paint for the leaves and the spider was applied to the block with a paint brush to get the small details.

Poppy added the finishing touches like the spiders legs and both the faces with coloured pencils after the paint had dried.

And thats how we did it!!! Please contact us if you have any questions.
